Biosphere 2 History. Not surprising, the area that is now Biosphere 2 had modern origins that are quintessentially southwestern-it was a ranch, Samaniego’s CDO Ranch to be precise. After evolving into a conference center in the mid-twentieth century, the place became Biosphere 2 in 1984, and in 2007, the University of Arizona took the reins of the research center in hand. Touring Biosphere 2. Curious to see Biosphere 2 for yourself? Since 2002, the facility has been open to the public, and tourists may see a great deal, from the living quarters where “Biospherians” live to the farmlands that they cultivate for food and research.
